When Christopher McDougall agreed to adopt a donkey, he figured it would hang out in a field, look cute, and eat carrots. But then he met Sherman, who was in such bad shape that Chris knew he was in over his head. Luckily, Chris’s neighbors—Amish farmers and an outspoken equine expert with a donkey of her own—were happy to help. They told him that what Sherman needed more than anything else was a job, a purpose. And Chris got a crazy idea. Maybe Sherman could race.
In the course of Sherman’s training, Chris would enlist Amish running clubs, high-spirited goats, the service animal community, and two long-distance, Sarah Palin - loving female truckers. But it would take Chris’s ever-patient wife, Mika, to hold the team together and Zeke, a young man struggling with depression, to show them all the power of the human/animal connection.
